Why did God create man if He knew man would sin?

18 07 2008

Have you ever thought about this before?  It’s a pretty deep question.  Why would God create mankind if He knew all along we would disobey, rebel and ultimately reject Him and His Son?

I would love to hear what you think about this issue?

Wow, that is deep. I think God wanted us to make a choice to accept him and love Him. He could have made us do the right thing but I think for Him it is a much sweeter victory when we come to Him of our own freewill. It shows a love and grace beyond all understanding, that He would create us knowing that we would sin. Besides, if we did not sin, then we would be perfect and there would not have been any reason for Christ to have died for us. Knowing Christ died and suffered willingly for ME makes my salvation the more sweeter for me. Does that make sense, LOL.

I agree with Kandie. I think that God wants acceptance just like like threst of us. Yes He knew that we would sin an reject him, but I believe he also knew that we wold love and serve him faithfully. That he would have children that would die for him, serve for him, and do just about anything for God.

I agree
I like it when people do things when I ask, but I appreciate it most when it’s done out of Love and concern for me and my well being.

I really dont have a clue. I wish I did though. Its something I never really understood or could figure out. Sometimes I wonder why he put me here if he knew I was going to sin and disobey like I do.

anonymous, you are not alone. We all struggle with sin. That’s exactly why Jesus chose to die for our sins…because He knew we could not make it to Heaven without Him. Your past is your past and you cannot change what you have done. But you can change today and you can change your future. :) Thanks for sharing.

I think that we are God’s goldfish. I mean think about it, goldfish dont do anything put swim. They dont talk with us, they dont give advice, they dont really entertain us and yet we still like to have them around because sometimes they do. I think we are like that to God. We dont always talk with love, we dont always go to God for advice, and rarely do we entertain God by following him and doing what he says, but God still loves us and still keeps us around because sometimes we do the right thing and make him proud.

I am a mom. Before I had a child I new they would do bad things. My husband and I still had them and our love for them is incredible. Since we are created in his image it may give insite to his reasoning. Amanda- cool analogy! I think you would be a red Beta fish:-)

I like to imagine the Heavenly Father more like my earthly parents. When I call them up they smile. I can hear it in their voice. They laugh and ask me how I’m doing. They recognize my voice and my pickup on my feelings immmediately. God wants to hear from us too.
Before we can talk, I must make a choice to pick up the phone and dial the number, or read my Bible. God wants to share our day with us. Good and bad, just like I do with my mom and dad. We have a choice everyday to talk with Him.
Communication is a lot like tennis, two players need to be focused and active in order to volley back and forth. What has distracted your attention away from communicating with God?

I think even tho God knew we would sin he wanted to create us and love us and also be able to give us that choice whether or not to follow him…

Rather than answering the question directly, I would argue that this question is the answer to a different question. God knew that there would be billions of people throughout history that would reject him. God also knew that to redeem a few, He would have to sacrifice His own Son. He could have chosen to say, “forget it.” But he felt that fellowship with a few was worth the sacrifice, so he went ahead with creation. So, knowing that man would sin _against God_, and that redemption would come with the death of Christ, why would God still choose to create man? As a favorite songs goes, “His love is wider than the ocean…”

That’s my take, anyway…

If God is real, then what is the point in creating a situation when you already know the outcome. You cannot think of God like you think of yourselves if he is the supposed “almighty”. Before God “created” everything, there were no families or religions. There was no right and wrong. Judging by what you have all said, you think that God created all of us sort of as a puppet show with a mind of its own, except for the fact that God knows the outcome and he still punishes even though he created us to sin. I don’t believe in a god and I don’t believe in religion anymore simply for the fact that every religion thinks that they are right and certain religions will kill those that argue with them. You say that God created man knowing he would sin, but how can he punish those that sin, when it is human to sin. I respect everyone’s right to believe, I just wish that those that are religious respected the rights of those that do not believe.

Hi Robert, thx for posting your thoughts. I can tell by your questions that you are very intelligent and that you have spent much time thinking about faith, religion and God. You have some very valid questions and I can totally respect them. I just wanted to reply to your very deep questions.

“God knows the outcome and he still punishes even though he created us to sin.”
God chose to create us with a free will. Freedom to choose or to reject. I do not have to sin, I choose to sin. I choose to lie or I choose to tell the truth. I choose to obey or I choose to rebel. God will not force his will upon me or anyone else. He wants us to choose to love and serve Him, not to make us do His bidding.

“I don’t believe in a god and I don’t believe in religion anymore simply for the fact that every religion thinks that they are right and certain religions will kill those that argue with them.”
I am sorry that you no longer believe in God. I am not a fan of religion. I don’t believe God is looking for a religion, but rather a relationship with Him. Religion divides and God has no part in that. Jesus Himself blasted the Pharisees because they were “religious”. They had no true desire to love God or to obey His commands. They were just trying to make themselves look “spiritual”. It’s very unfortunate that there are religions that choose to kill those that disagree with their belief system. This however is far from the message that Jesus proclaimed while He was on the earth and is contrary to what the Bible teaches. Jesus did however say that “I am the way the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father but through me”. Something is either the truth or it is not the truth. You cannot have two truths that contradict each other. Again, it’s not about a religion, but a relationship with Jesus Christ.

“You say that God created man knowing he would sin, but how can he punish those that sin, when it is human to sin.”
I guess the same could be said about the law. We have laws that tell us what we can and cannot do in order to protect us and others. If I were arrested for speeding, would it hold up in court if I said, “I was born with a need for speed?” I might have an inclination to speed but I have a choice on how fast I choose to drive. Nothing makes me speed other than my selfish desires. The same is true about us and God. My inclination might be to do wrong, but ultimately, it is I who chooses whether to obey God or disobey God and sin.

“I just wish that those that are religious respected the rights of those that do not believe.”
Robert, I could not agree with you more. Jesus lived and proclaimed a message of love, not hate and judgement. He came to save those that are lost and offer freedom to those that are in bondage. He came to offer hope to the hopeless, and give comfort to those that are hurting. Those that have a true relationship with God should have the same attitude of Christ…that of love. Those that have just a “religion” are more likely to condemn.

I wish you well in your search for truth. If I can be of any help in your journey, or if you have any other questions, I would be glad to talk to you.

Well said Michael. I couldn’t agree more. Choices are not easy sometimes. But none the less, they are our choices to make. That is the great thing about God. He GAVE us the ability to choose Him or Not. We do have to face the consequences for our choices. Just like here in our country… There are rules and if we choose not to follow……there are consequences.

So it makes sense that God showed his love for us by creating us in giving us free will, but then what about the millions of people who never even heard the gospel. It seems awfully self righteous to say that all those people are going to go to hell just because they were born somewhere where can’t hear the gospel and make a choice for themselves.

Thx for your thought Ryan. I would encourage you to read the first chapter of the book of Romans. Paul says, “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities–his eternal power and divine nature–have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.” God has made Himself known to man through His creation. Just because they have not heard the Gospel does not mean they cannot be saved. God says that we will find Him when we seek Him with all of our heart. If there is someone seeking after God in Africa, don’t you think God is big enough and powerful enough to reveal Himself to them? Would it be too big of a task for God to bring a missionary to that person that is truly seeking out truth?

but just look at all the suffering it all caused. i would not have created a world if i knew all the suffering it would cause, and i’m human. also god knows from the beginning whether i’m going to accept him, so why make me if he knew all along what i would do. so, he’ll send me to hell foever when it was his idea all along. would it not have been better that i’d never been born. no hell to face or fear.
what do you think- love to know

Hi Kris, you have some fantastic questions. I too would not have created a world if I knew all the suffering it would cause, but as you stated, we are human. We think with finite minds with limited understanding and wisdom and God has an infinite mind, unlimited understanding and infinite wisdom. The Bible says that His thoughts are not our thoughts and His ways are not our ways. Since God knows all things, He does know who will accept or reject His son Jesus. Just because God knows something will happen doesn’t mean that He caused it. Example, God knows that someone will murder another person today, yet God did not cause it to happen. It was done by free will and choice. Same is true with salvation. God knows who will accept Him and if someone goes to hell, it is because of their free will and choice. God chose to create you to worship Him and so that He could have a relationship with you. It’s up to you to make that happen. He will not make you do either one of those. It would not be better that you have not been born because right now, you still have a choice to to follow Him, to live for Him and to accept His forgiveness for your sins. One day, you will not have that choice…the day that you die. Unfortunately, none of us is promised tomorrow. That’s why the Bible says, “Today is the day of salvation.”. I too would love to hear what you think about what I’ve shared. Feel free to ask any questions you might have. I don’t have all the answers, but I know who does. :) Michael

Thanks for your comments Michael. but if i was standing next to God on the day he created me i would ask him not to give me free will because we both know what’s going to happen when i get it. so what i’m saying is that i wish God hadn’t given me a free will because then i would definitely be going to heaven. i wouldn’t thank God for giving me a free will. scared of hell and it’s all gong to be my fault.
well thanks alot God!
PS Michael, you said: “just because God knows something will happen doesn’t mean that He caused it.”

well, michael, if you knew that something bad was going to happen to your daughter you would prvent it if you had the power. so if you didn’t in a way you would be a type of cause?
